// sports & remedial massage

Sports & Remedial Massage is one of the most effective ways of releasing muscle tension and restoring balance to the musculoskeletal system.

Anyone can benefit from Sports Massage, you do not need to be involved in sport to benefit from Sports Massage. This type of treatment can assist in the recovery from injury or help in the correction of postural imbalances from repeated postures of everyday life or occupation.

// The Effects

Increased tissue permeability -

Deep massage causes the pores in tissue membranes to open, enabling fluids and nutrients to pass through. This encourages the removal of waste products and allows the muscles to take up oxygen and nutrients which help them recover quicker.

Stretching -

Massage can stretch tissues that can not be stretched in the usual methods. Bundles of muscle fibres are stretched lengthwise as well as sideways. Massage can also stretch the fascia that surrounds the muscle, so releasing any tension or pressure build up.

Break down adhesions -

Adhesions form as a result of micro-tears healing, or from previous injuries or trauma, and can affect muscle, tendons and ligaments. This can lead to inflexible tissues that are prone to injury and pain.

Improve tissue elasticity -

Hard training can make tissues hard and inelastic. This is one reason why hard training may not result in improvements. Massage helps reverse this by stretching the tissues.

Opens micro-circulation -

Massage does increase blood flow to tissues, but so does exercise. What massage also does is open or dilate the blood vessels and by stretching them this enables nutrients to pass through more easily.

Pain reduction -

Tension and waste products in muscles can often cause pain. Massage helps reduce this in many ways including releasing the bodies endorphins.

Relaxation -

Muscles relax through heat generated, circulation and stretching. Mechanoreceptors which sense touch, pressure, tissue length and warmth are stimulated causing a reflex relaxation.

// Helps to

Elevate general aches and pains

Assist soft tissue repair and recovery from injury

Assist with postural imbalances

Restore optimum tissue health

Promote relaxation and well being

Following an initial assessment and mutually agreed treatment plan, a variety of soft tissue and sports massage techniques are used to ensure you reach your treatment goal.

Anyone looking to relieve muscle tension, reduce pain or optimise recovery in preparation for an event or goal.

// maintenance massage

Maintenance massage is a regular treatment programme based on the understanding of anatomy and of the muscles used and affected by a given sport or activity.

By concentrating on particular muscle groups, the individual is able to maintain or improve their range of motion and muscle flexibility.

// Pre/post event

Pre-event massage supplements an athlete’s warm-up to enhance circulation, reduce excess muscle & mental tension prior to competition. It is tailored to the needs of the athlete & the event.

Post-event massage is geared towards reducing muscle spasms & metabolic build-up that occurs with vigorous exercise. The techniques enhance the body’s recovery process & improve the athlete’s ability to return to training and competition, and reducing the risk of injury.
